Voices from Ukraine: Stories of the students who came to Kiel

As part of the project “Ukraine Digital: Ensuring Academic Success in Times of Crisis with Funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research,” during the autumn semester of 2022-2023, five students had the opportunity to visit the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. They attended lectures, took part in social life, and became acquainted with the cultural and historical heritage of Germany. We want to share the stories of some of them with you.

We asked Vladyslav how his education and life changed after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The educational process shifted to an online study, which did not allow quality learning and communication with instructors, as the system was not prepared for military actions. Due to this situation, his emotional state deteriorated, but after participating in the program, he had the chance to distract himself from the events in his homeland. Vladyslav had the opportunity to gain valuable experience and meet new people. The war is still ongoing, and the life will never be the same as before, but the program allowed him to see the world in peace, which means a lot to him.

Marianna recalls that due to stress and communication disruptions in the occupied city, it was not always possible to attend classes. Learning became much more challenging than during the pandemic. The most challenging part was leaving her hometown and witnessing what the war was doing to it.

Thanks to the program, she felt safe and could study at a German university. The scholarship added vibrant colors to her life and allowed her to meet with friends, which made her very happy.

The program emerged as a beacon of change in Valeria‘s life. It introduced her to fresh opportunities, illuminating a path forward amid uncertainty. A scholarship marked a pivotal moment, offering her the chance to escape the occupied zone. While the journey was fraught with farewells, nerves, and a new country’s challenges, Valeria approached each hurdle with unwavering determination. The scholarship not only alleviated financial strain but also transformed adversity into a catalyst for personal growth.

Valeria’s story is a testament to her resilience and her ability to turn trials into stepping stones on her journey toward a brighter future.

Olena shares that the morning of February 24th will forever remain in her memory as the most horrifying day of her life. The hardest part was realizing that planes carrying ammunition flew overhead, posing a threat to Ukrainians. Places she used to visit with friends were now completely destroyed.

Now, she understands the meaning of phrases spoken by her grandparents: “The main thing is to avoid war.” Despite having studies, switching to online did not hinder her from obtaining quality education. Germany became a peaceful and safe place for her. She is very grateful to the Germans for their friendliness and willingness to help during these difficult times.

Therefore, supporting young people in light of the current situation is a crucial aspect for the development of European values and our shared secure future.
