Prof. Dr. Kai Carstensen Welcomes Summer School Participants

On June 8, 2026, the ACTI-K² Summer School was officially launched as part of the international project “Academic Cooperation and Teaching Initiative Kiel–Kherson” (ACTI-K²), supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). During the opening session, participants were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Kai Carstensen, who delivered an introductory address on the role and significance of Statistical Data Science in today’s world.

Understanding Statistical Data Science

In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Kai Carstensen spoke about the essence of Statistical Data Science and its role in addressing real-world questions through the use of data, statistics, computation and visualisation. He emphasised that Data Science is not a single method but rather a comprehensive workflow for learning from data, from formulating a research question and collecting data to developing models and communicating results.

Team Projects and Collaboration

Students from Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University (KSAEU) and Kiel University (CAU) were introduced to the team projects that will accompany them throughout the Summer School. Prof. Dr. Kai Carstensen highlighted the importance of collaboration, data-driven thinking and the ability to transform analytical findings into meaningful stories supported by evidence. His presentation provided participants with an overview of the key concepts that will guide their work during the programme and set the stage for the collaborative activities ahead.
