Cooperation between Kiel University (CAU) and Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University (KSAEU) has brought new laboratory equipment and practical training to KSAEU. A Shimadzu UV-1280 spectrophotometer, put into operation on 8 October 2026, will support agricultural research and laboratory teaching.
Expanding laboratory analysis
The instrument enables measurements in the ultraviolet and visible ranges. It can be used to determine concentrations of substances in solutions and analyse plant pigments, supporting work in agronomy, soil science and biochemistry.
The equipment also creates scope for undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students to gain experience with analytical methods and carry out experimental work.
Training for research and teaching
KSAEU lecturers have completed training in operating the equipment. The skills acquired can support its use in laboratory classes, research projects and student experimental work.
Doctoral students in the Department of Agronomy have also received initial instruction in using the spectrophotometer.
Supporting German-Ukrainian cooperation
The equipment and training form part of the Lab Cooperation activity within the German-Ukrainian University Network (DUHN) project “Academic Cooperation and Teaching Initiative Kiel-Kherson” (ACTI-K²), supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
By combining investment in laboratory infrastructure with practical training, the project is intended to strengthen research skills, improve teaching and support further joint work between CAU and KSAEU.
