Guest Lecture by Andrea Thiessen on Insurance Risk Analysis

As part of the ACTI-K² Summer School 2026, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and jointly organised by Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University (KSAEU) and Kiel University (CAU), participants attended a lecture delivered by Andrea Thiessen, representative of Itzehoer Versicherungen, dedicated to the topic of insurance claims after cumulative loss events.

Data Science in the Insurance Industry

During the lecture, participants were introduced to Itzehoer Versicherungen and gained insights into the role of statistical data science in the insurance sector. Andrea Thiessen demonstrated how data analysis supports risk assessment, claims management and decision-making processes within an insurance company. The session highlighted the importance of working with large datasets to better understand risks and improve business operations.

Predicting Insurance Claims

A central focus of the lecture was the prediction of insurance claims following cumulative loss events such as storms, hail, floods and other natural disasters. Through a combination of lecture and practice elements, participants explored how claim data can be analysed to identify patterns, estimate potential losses and support forecasting processes. The session demonstrated how data-driven approaches help insurance companies prepare for large-scale events and respond more effectively to future risks.

We sincerely thank Andrea Thiessen for her engaging and insightful lecture. Her presentation provided participants with valuable insights into the practical application of data science in the insurance industry and demonstrated how analytical methods can support effective risk management and decision-making in real-world scenarios.
